The 11 Types Of Koi Fish You NEED To Know

Discover the most popular koi fish varieties including Kohaku, Sanke, Showa, and more for your backyard pond.

Koi fish come in over 100 varieties, but knowing the most popular types helps you choose the perfect fish for your pond. Here are the 11 koi varieties every pond owner should know.

    1. Gosanke Koi

The "Big Three" of koi keeping—Kohaku, Sanke, and Showa. These are the most prized and sought-after varieties, distinguished by their red, white, and black colorations.

    2. Kohaku Koi

The most iconic koi variety. White body with red (hi) markings. A quality Kohaku with crisp pattern edges is highly valued. These are often recommended for beginners due to their beauty and hardiness.

    3. Taisho Sanke Koi

White body with red and black markings. Unlike Showa, Sanke have no black on the head. The three-color pattern creates stunning visual interest.

    4. Tancho Koi

Named after the Japanese crane, Tancho koi feature a single red circle on an otherwise white head—resembling the Japanese flag. Extremely popular and symbolic.

    5. Butterfly Koi

Distinguished by their long, flowing fins that resemble butterfly wings. Also called Dragon Koi. Available in all color varieties. Graceful swimmers that add elegance to any pond.

    6. Doitsu Koi

German-bred koi with either no scales or scales only along the dorsal and lateral lines. Available in all color varieties. The scaleless skin shows colors more vividly.

    7. Utsurimono Koi

Black-based koi with white, red, or yellow markings. The contrast creates dramatic visual impact. Includes Hi Utsuri (black and red) and Shiro Utsuri (black and white).

    8. Hikarimono Koi

Metallic, single-colored koi that shimmer in sunlight. Includes platinum Ogon and gold Yamabuki Ogon. Their reflective scales catch light beautifully.

    9. Showa Sanshoku Koi

Black-based koi with red and white markings. Unlike Sanke, Showa have black (sumi) on the head. The deep black creates dramatic contrast.

    10. Gin Rin Koi

Any koi variety with reflective, diamond-like scales. The sparkling effect is stunning in sunlight. Adds extra visual interest to traditional patterns.

    11. Kawarimono Koi

The "miscellaneous" category including unique varieties that don't fit other classifications. Includes single-colored non-metallic koi and unusual patterns.

    Choosing Koi for Your Pond

Consider: - Color preference: Which patterns appeal to you? - Pond size: Koi grow large; plan for adult size - Climate: Some varieties are hardier than others - Budget: Rare varieties command premium prices

    Koi Care Basics

    • Regardless of variety, all koi need:
    • Clean, well-filtered water
    • Adequate pond depth (minimum 3 feet)
    • Quality nutrition
    • Protection from predators
    • Proper aeration
