Pondless Waterfall vs Pond with Waterfall

Two beautiful options, one important decision. Here's everything you need to know to choose the right water feature for your space.

Both pondless waterfalls and traditional pond waterfalls bring the soothing sound of flowing water to your outdoor space—but they serve different purposes and suit different lifestyles. Understanding the key differences will help you invest in the water feature that brings you the most joy for years to come.

With over 20 years building water features across Kansas City and Northwest Arkansas, we've helped hundreds of homeowners navigate this decision. Here's what we've learned.

    What's the Difference?

Pondless waterfall with natural stone stream

    Pondless Waterfall

A pondless waterfall features cascading water that disappears into an underground reservoir hidden beneath decorative rock. No exposed pond means maximum safety and minimum maintenance.

    • Perfect for families with young children
    • Ideal for small or sloped yards
    • Lowest maintenance water feature
Koi pond with waterfall and aquatic plants

    Pond with Waterfall

A traditional pond waterfall combines a beautiful waterfall with a living pond ecosystem. Enjoy fish, water lilies, and the full nature experience right in your backyard.

    • Home for koi, goldfish, and wildlife
    • Beautiful aquatic plants
    • Complete ecosystem experience

    Frequently Asked Questions

Can I convert a pondless waterfall to a pond later?

Yes! We design many pondless waterfalls with future pond conversion in mind. The underground basin can be expanded into a visible pond, and the waterfall typically needs minimal modification.

    Which uses more electricity?

Both use similar pump systems, so electricity costs are comparable. Pondless features can be turned off completely when you're away, while pond pumps should run continuously.

Do I need a permit for either option?

In most Kansas City and Northwest Arkansas communities, residential water features under 24" deep don't require permits. We handle all permit research during our design process.

    What about mosquitoes?

Neither feature attracts mosquitoes when properly designed. Moving water prevents breeding, and pond fish actively eat mosquito larvae. Stagnant water is the enemy—our features are never stagnant.
