Despite their association with indoor bowls, goldfish originated in outdoor ponds in China over 1,000 years ago. They're well-suited to pond life and often thrive better outdoors than indoors.

Goldfish can survive outdoors year-round in our region if:

1. Pond Depth: Minimum 2.5-3 feet deep provides unfrozen water at bottom 2. De-icer or Aerator: Keeps a hole in ice for gas exchange 3. Stop Feeding: When water temperature drops below 50°F 4. Avoid Disturbance: Don't break ice; vibrations stress dormant fish
