Pond Fish Stocking in Kansas City

Pond Fish Stocking: Koi, Goldfish & Native Species

Species selection, quarantine, and gradual acclimation for new ponds — the difference between fish that thrive and fish that stress.

Stocking a new pond correctly is more than buying koi and dropping them in. Water chemistry has to stabilize, the biological filter has to establish, and fish need proper quarantine and acclimation. Freedom Stone + Pondscapes handles species selection, sourcing, quarantine, and acclimation for new koi and goldfish stocking across Kansas City and Northwest Arkansas.

Pond Fish Stocking for Kansas City Pond Owners

New pond, new fish. But stocking a fresh pond isn't as simple as buying koi and dropping them in. Water chemistry needs to stabilize, the biological filter needs to establish (typically 4–6 weeks), and fish need proper quarantine and gradual acclimation to avoid the shock losses that kill more new-pond fish than anything else.

We source healthy fish from established suppliers, quarantine when needed, and acclimate gradually so your first fish become the foundation of a long-lived population. Standard koi, butterfly koi, show-quality varieties, goldfish, and native species for swim ponds are all on the menu.

Here's what we stock, how, and what to expect long-term.

    What's Included

Every pond fish stocking visit covers the essentials your pond needs.

    Species Selection Consult

We match fish selection to pond size, filtration capacity, and your goals — display, collection, or ecosystem balance.

    Sourcing

Fish from established, health-tested suppliers rather than big-box retail.

    Quarantine

When needed, new arrivals go through quarantine before joining the main pond.

    Gradual Acclimation

Slow temperature and water chemistry equalization before release.

    First-Feeding Guidance

Written feeding schedule for the first 30 days so you don't overfeed a new biological system.

    Ongoing Support

We're available for health, water quality, and additions over the life of the pond.

    Pricing Guide

General guidelines. Final pricing depends on pond size, condition, and access.

    Goldfish & Starter Koi

    $200–$800

Comet, shubunkin, and small standard koi for new-pond starter populations.

    Standard Koi Stocking

    $800–$3,000

Mixed standard and butterfly koi, 6–12 fish for a residential pond.

    Show-Quality / Collector

    $3,000–$10,000+

Show-grade Kohaku, Sanke, Showa, and imported varieties.

Standard koi run $50–$150 per fish. Butterfly koi similar. Show-quality Kohaku, Sanke, and Showa run $500–$5,000+ per fish.

    Why Stocking Sequence Matters

The biggest mistake new pond owners make is stocking too many fish, too soon. A pond that's been running for 2 weeks has almost no biological filtration capacity. The bacteria that convert fish waste (ammonia → nitrite → nitrate) take 4–6 weeks to establish. Overstock in that window and you crash the water chemistry, killing fish and setting the pond's biology back to zero.

We stage stocking: a small starter group (usually goldfish or a few small koi) 4–6 weeks after pond commissioning, then a second group after 3–4 months once we can verify the filter is handling the load, then any final additions after the first winter.

Fish added this way live longer, color up better, and don't cost you replacements after a chemistry crash.

    Our Process

    1

    Pond Cycling Check

We verify pond has cycled — ammonia and nitrite at zero, nitrate detectable — before first stocking.

    2

    Species & Count

You approve species, colors, and count based on pond capacity and goals.

    3

    Sourcing & Delivery

Fish sourced from trusted suppliers and delivered to the property.

    4

    Acclimate & Release

Slow temperature and pH matching (30–60 minutes), then release. We stay for release and initial observation.

    5

    First-Month Check-In

Follow-up water test and health check at the 30-day mark.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Rule of thumb: 1 inch of adult koi per 10 gallons for well-filtered ponds, 1" per 20 gallons for lightly filtered ponds. We calculate carrying capacity for your specific pond during the consult.

Minimum 4 weeks after commissioning, ideally 6, so the biological filter has cycled. Adding earlier risks ammonia and nitrite spikes.

Goldfish are hardier, cheaper, and forgiving of new-pond mistakes. Koi are the iconic choice and grow much larger. Many owners start with a mix or start with goldfish and upgrade to koi in year two.

For show-quality and imported fish, yes. For standard stock from health-verified suppliers we typically go straight to gradual acclimation.

Sourced fish carry standard supplier guarantees. We back our acclimation process — if a fish we deliver and release fails to acclimate, we replace it.

Yes. We handle additions any time capacity allows. New additions go through the same acclimation and, for high-value fish, quarantine.
